Some people may live under a grim childhood, making them hate the world around us; on the other hand, some may live under a happy environment, creating an optimistic idea.
-Student D
FINDINGS

This response reveals that the student did not have the vocabulary to discuss privilege, or to expand on what a “grim” childhood would look like, and what factors (environmental, systemic etc) lead to such an upbringing that would not create an “optimistic idea.” After reading this response, I wondered if as a class we would have to examine notions like “happy” and optimistic” and factor perspective and privilege into these concepts that we have come to universalize.
